Rebell of The Month: Kim Torkelson

We are excited to announce that Kim is our Rebell of The Month for September!! Kim is a bad ass who does some pretty cool things at the gym. She is always fun to work with and has a diverse background in exercise. She's made some huge strides in goals while working with us and we are excited to share them with you!

Tell us about yourself

I grew up local, married my high school sweetheart, and we have 2 children. I was not athletic at all during my youth – in fact, my interest in exercise did not begin until my late 20’s. After the children were born, I was looking to make some healthier lifestyle choices. It took me a lot of trial and error to find my likes and dislikes, but that is why fitness is so great – there truly is something for everyone! I have some weightlifting background, dabbled in CrossFit, and have also done some half-marathon distance running.

Thoughts about strength training before/after becoming a Rebell

I love strength training. I came to Restored Strength with a good base of knowledge about strength training, but I have learned a lot, too! I have learned that you can strength train with more than just dumbbells and barbells. I have learned that you don’t always have to lift heavy or to fatigue to gain strength. And I have definitely learned that kettlebells are for more than just KB swings!

Obstacles you overcame

I stopped exercising for about a year when COVID hit, and was looking around for a gym to help get me started back into a routine. I have been successful at attending 2-3 classes a week, which was my goal. The accountability has been wonderful, and is something that really keeps me going.

Achievements you accomplished at Restored Strength

I always love when I’m able to increase in weights. I’ve learned, though, that fitness isn’t always measured in how much you can lift, or how far or fast you can run. My greatest achievement is the mindset shift from working out until exhaustion to knowing how much effort to apply and still be able to function, lol! It’s no fun being stiff and sore all the time – and I haven’t felt that way since I’ve been going to Restored Strength!

What changes have others noticed?

My mood has changed, definitely. I’m a much happier person when I exercise regularly. And I have more energy to do daily tasks and play with the kids.

"I exercise so I have the strength and energy to be active with my family, and do the things we enjoy (like kayak)!"

What do you tell your friends about RS?

I chose Restored Strength because I had taken a bit of a hiatus from physical fitness (as stated earlier), and was looking for some help and structure as I got back into a routine. I like the small class sizes – it provides a group setting and you still have the coach there for assistance and teaching. The laid back atmosphere is so amazing.

What’s your favorite thing about RS?

I love the atmosphere. The members and coaches are amazing. It is quirky and fun! Don’t let that fool you, we do work hard too! I love that people of all walks of life and all fitness levels are welcome. Workouts can be modified to any fitness level, yet we still exercise as one class. It’s great!

Results you’ve gotten from our gym:

I have noticed more energy, elevated mood, and less joint stiffness.

Why is RS different?

I love how you ask us every day how we are feeling and if there is anything new you should be aware about. I appreciate that so much! I like how workouts can be modified for all fitness levels.
